Social Media Influencers Driving Parallel Market for Unapproved Slimming Medication
An underground economy for unlicensed weight-loss drugs is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on communication apps, according to new investigations.
Investigational Drug Gaining Popularity Online
Retatrutide, which is still in research studies, is being promoted by online personalities for its alleged weight-reducing effects. Followers are urged to message these accounts privately for supplier links, while also obtaining discount codes.
Thriving Commerce on Messaging Platforms
Separately, a robust trade exists on messaging services, where communities with thousands of participants share comparison photos, injection guides and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers market the drug there before redirecting buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Learning About Retatrutide
This medication is an experimental injectable created by US drugmaker Eli Lilly. The drug targets three intestinal hormones – GLP-1, GIP and pancreatic hormone. Early trials suggest it could help individuals reduce up to a quarter of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the successor to Ozempic.
Medical Professionals Express Concerns
Nevertheless, doctors and pharmacists have warned that the sale of what is still an unlicensed medication in the UK is a cause for concern and could result in users injecting products of unknown origin.
Several professionals said the demand for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing price of approved weight loss products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Implementation
Selling the unapproved drug on social media or Telegram is illegal in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that must not be promoted or distributed for personal consumption under the Human Medicines Regulations 2012.
Some content creators attempt to sidestep the regulations by referring to the substance as a “research chemical” or describing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled substance, but advertising and distribution can still violate medicines, marketing, and customer regulations, risking fines, prosecution or prison.
Service Reaction and Content Elimination
Based on the social media company, the platform has taken down problematic content and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The company said it was committed to maintaining the service safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Trading Activities
Investigations also found groups with up to nine thousand members marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a public directory. Entering “retatrutide” instantly displays channels with thousands of members, filled with images of weight loss, glowing reviews and step-by-step instructions for preparing or injecting at home.
Within minutes of entering one group, a vendor posted WhatsApp details, where the majority of purchases occur. The seller provided an guidebook and promised delivery within two days. When questioned whether the product was genuine, one seller said: “You can’t be sure.” Another provided a image of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about body mass, medical conditions or past usage.
Product Details and Pricing
Inside these groups, posts show black plastic parcels with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to include fresh supplies. One message stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Customers can select between dry substance containers, prepared at residence with purified liquid, or ready-to-use injectors typically sold at 160 pounds for 20mg. When asked how long a pen should last, vendors give contradictory answers ranging from a several days to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Security Actions
A spokesperson for the messaging service stated it actively moderated dangerous content on its service including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The organization noted that it eliminated “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Expert Cautions
“People are injecting materials they cannot confirm. Although the research behind retatrutide is valid, these digital products may not include what they claim,” said a pharmacy expert, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
A medical professional of an online medical service connected the surge in interest to current cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With prices increasing, individuals are using social media. But counterfeit injections are extremely dangerous. You cannot know what’s contained or whether the environment they were produced in was sterile,” she said.
Her staff has already encountered patients injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the disappointment, but buying from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your health,” stated Wyllie. “These substances could be impure or improperly measured.”
Producer Position
A spokesperson from Eli Lilly said retatrutide was in third stage research studies and had not been evaluated or approved by any government authority anywhere in the world. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they explained, noting that any item “falsely representing itself as a company experimental product not yet authorized … may expose patients to potentially serious health risks”.
